Rachel De Jaen
Software Development Engineer Intern
I’m originally from Seattle and staying here with my family (and cat, Leonard) for the summer! I’m a rising senior at UC Berkeley studying Computer Science and Hispanic Linguistics, and outside of classes I’m mainly involved in the CS Education community and I TA for our Advanced Algorithms undergrad course. In my free time I’ve been cooking a lot, tending to my houseplants, walking around my neighborhood after work, and zoom calling my friends from school!
My internship has been going really well so far! I interned last summer on the Vanguard Platform team and enjoyed it a lot, so I was glad to come back and work with the Insights and Action Plans team. So far this summer I’ve completed two insights (which show customers different ways they could save money based on their data in CT), one of which is already in production and the second one will be going in our next release. I also expanded our query functionality which now lets us create more complex and meaningful insights—this was really exciting to work on since a good portion of my team relied on it, so it was encouraging to be trusted with that much responsibility as an intern. More recently I’ve been collaborating with our Product Management team to let customers disable, hide, freeze, and prioritize insights, which should give our customers a more customizable experience on the Insights application.
While working on one insight I was having a lot of trouble calculating the potential benefit value, which is essentially how much money a customer could save if they follow the advice from the insight. I was determined it was an error in something I wrote, but after discussing it with my mentor we concluded that it would not be possible with our current functionality. So, after starting on a new approach and testing, we determined this second method also wouldn’t be possible due different reasons and we’d need some extra changes to support this. It was a very iterative development process, but I’m glad that I reached out for help when I needed it (thanks @Ben O’Harra!) because otherwise I think I would have spent a lot more time on it.
My team’s been awesome about fostering a sense of collaboration even in the remote setting so when approaching projects that involved a design component, I’ve learned how to accept critical feedback and to not be afraid of switching designs if I’m confident it’ll produce a better result. I’ve also learned to stay critical myself, and to voice my opinions if I think a customer or the software design would benefit.

Jess Belliveau
Senior Infrastructure Engineer, APAC
Looking back, when I joined Apptio I felt like a wide-eyed beginner – sure, I had years of experience as a system administrator/operator – but joining Apptio felt like a step into the big league. Classic imposter syndrome – but everyone seemed so switched on!
When I joined, I had no idea Apptio would carry me where I am today – the programming languages I’ve been exposed to! Learning about, and now helping with the adoption of observability. Not to mention consuming AWS services and understanding how it all ties together. Just as I feel complacency, I’m challenged again – its wild!
While I’ve technically been on a journey with Apptio, I’m proud to say I’ve built many friendships while here as well. The people who make up Apptio are exponentially more interesting than the technology – finding hidden Slack channels and making friendships over shared interests – on a global scale! Many of my Apptio friends I see physically once, maybe twice a year (if that!) but still we chat on Slack or hop on a zoom and catch up.
Apptio is very much what you make of it – there is freedom to drive change and explore options.
Many features from the infrastructure teams have not been driven from the top down – but instead built to support a team doing something new or testing an idea to reduce friction of deployment. If you see an area you think can be improved, don’t be afraid to ask questions and speak up. Sometimes fresh eyes or a different perspective is exactly what we need.
I would implore everyone to listen to their peers, solicit feedback far and wide and approach each challenge at Apptio with an open mind. Empathy is so important when working across so many different technologies and understanding each team is striving to do their best within their frame of context. Don’t be quick to judge, but instead take time to understand an opposing point of view and consider what thought and work has already gone into a decision being made.
I want to be able to help Apptians and rise to each challenge set! Being pushed means I need to keep learning as best I can and keeping up with movements within the company and industry. Being able to answer those “quick” Slack questions or understand where to redirect a JIRA issue to the correct team for action.
I feel engaged by the relationships I’ve built – and new ones I’m building. Interacting with and learning from the people around me or just having a bit of fun with a Kahoot trivia session with the APAC team.
Each week with Apptio I’m exposed to something new – not just on a technical level, but also on a personal level. I’m lucky working with so many various teams and the knowledge sharing/discoveries that go along with that – but also being able to interact with Apptians around the globe.
Things have changed, things are changing, and things will keep changing – I’m so proud to not feel like the wide-eyed new starter anymore. I’ve helped onboard countless Apptians and have helped drive projects that change the way we consume our platforms, participated in many more that strive to make us stronger and more resilient. I look forward to growing even more with each experience!

Prabhu Karunakaran
Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Tech Ops
I joined DigitalFuel (now known as Apptio) in April 2017 as a Senior Technical Support Engineer. During my tenure as an Apptio support engineer, I was working closely with the Tech-Ops team and became fascinated with the technology, tools, roles, responsibilities and the type of work they were doing. I was hungry to learn new technologies and had a strong desire to deliver results.
In the quest to learn and take on new challenges, I approached my management team and expressed interest to move to the Tech-Ops team. Sure enough, shortly after that conversation, there was an opportunity for me to move to Tech-Ops and I seized the opportunity with both hands. I considered opportunity and responsibility as components of success, and gladly accepted the position on the Tech-Ops team.
Currently, I am thoroughly enjoying my role in Tech-Ops, learning new DevOps tools all the time and accepting new opportunities to learn and grow in this role.
I encourage people to be bold, be clear on what they want to do, discuss with their immediate manager and wait for the opportunity to present itself for a career move. Constant communication with your immediate manager, peers and cross functional teams is essential to understand and identify areas of growth and new opportunities.
I must say, that Apptio has done a great job of providing career growth opportunities and I am excited by the openness and culture that is promoted within the company. In my experience, the management team has been extremely transparent and willing to listen and help when the opportunity arises.
In addition, my hunger to learn new technologies and I am extremely passionate about my work. I have a burning desire to succeed and I’m not afraid to take on new challenges. I always strive to give better than my best every single day. All the above and the support of the management team are all sure ingredients for success!

Christopher Dickens
Solutions Consultant
I came to Apptio two years ago from a role in nuclear engineering as a Technical Sales Engineer for the Presales team in EMEA. Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to grow my technical and consulting skills while also supporting both strategic and enterprise sales and I quickly progressed into a Senior Technical Sales Engineer role. During that time, I grew my skills supporting deals and progressed into the Solution Consulting role where I am now responsible for the customer-facing solution architecting component of the sales cycle.
Often the most fruitful career path is the one that seems the hardest and even if you don’t reach your goals there are many unexpected ways the hard work pays off. Also, the term “If you don’t ask, you don’t get” has worked for me throughout my career.
Fast pace and constant change leads to new challenges and highlights how much more there is to learn.
The people! I have received astonishing support and mentoring during my time at Apptio and greatly enjoyed working with my EMEA and US teams.
