Reckitt reduces cloud spend with IBM Cloudability

“Cloudability is a key enabler in advancing our FinOps maturity. It helps us drive efficiency without compromising productivity.”

Executive summary

Reckitt, a global leader in consumer health and hygiene products, embarked on a cloud transformation journey, migrating workloads from its data centers to the cloud to accelerate innovation and agility. As cloud adoption scaled across the organisation, Reckitt recognised an opportunity to enhance financial visibility and optimise cloud spend across its product streams.

To support this evolution, Reckitt implemented a FinOps strategy powered by IBM Cloudability. This move enabled the company to strengthen governance, foster accountability, and equip product teams with the insights needed to manage their cloud usage effectively.

Company overview

Reckitt is a global leader in the consumer goods industry, specialising in health and hygiene products. Its product portfolio includes many of the world’s most recognisable brands, such as Lysol, Dettol, Finish, and Durex. The company is headquartered in the UK and has operations in more than 60 countries. Reckitt’s purpose is to protect, heal, and nurture in the pursuit of a cleaner, healthier world.

The challenge

As part of its cloud-first strategy, Reckitt accelerated its migration using a “lift-and-shift” approach to quickly move applications and unlock agility across the business.

This rapid scale-up brought new opportunities, and new complexities. With cloud usage expanding across diverse teams, Reckitt saw an opportunity to strengthen financial visibility and foster greater accountability.

“We realised we needed deeper insights and stronger governance to support our cloud ambitions,” said Wladimir (Wlad) Clemente, IT&D Strategy and Operations Director at Reckitt. “It wasn’t just about tracking spend, it was about empowering teams to understand and take ownership of it.”

Initial efforts focused on building visibility through manual reporting and Power BI dashboards connected to LeanIX, Reckitt’s application portfolio management tool. While these tools provided a starting point, they highlighted the need for more actionable insights and consistent tagging to drive meaningful change. With different business areas managing costs independently, Reckitt saw the potential to unify its approach and create a shared framework for financial accountability across the organization.

The solution

Reckitt launched a formal FinOps process, empowering teams to manage their own cloud spend and make informed decisions.

To support this process, Reckitt selected IBM Cloudability after running a competitive process. Its ability to operate at enterprise scale, integrate with LeanIX, and provide actionable insights made it the ideal foundation for Reckitt’s FinOps strategy. Cloudability’s FOCUS templates and seamless cost allocation capabilities helped solve longstanding challenges around shared services and transparency.

“What really set Cloudability apart was its ability to integrate seamlessly with LeanIX and allocate costs in a way we could trust,” said Bruce Rawstorne, FinOps Analyst at Reckitt.

Working closely with Apptio, Reckitt integrated data from Azure and LeanIX into Cloudability, enabling automated, trusted reporting. Training programs created “FinOps Champions” across product streams, embedding financial accountability into day-to-day operations.

The results

The impact of deploying Cloudability was immediate and measurable. Within six months, the FinOps team were able to achieve the lowest monthly cloud cost since the FinOps function was established. Reckitt reduced its overall monthly cloud spend by 25% while Reserved Instance wastage was reduced by 97%. Automated shutdowns and cleanup of unused resources, such as unattached disks, added further savings.

Cloudability became the single source of truth for cloud spend across the technology function. With Power BI as the executive layer, teams gained real-time visibility into costs by product, application, or subscription. Improved tagging compliance and consistent data built trust across the organisation.

Next steps

Reckitt continues to evolve its FinOps capabilities. The next phase focuses on deeper application efficiency assessments and integrating optimization insights directly into team workflows. The goal: make cost efficiency an intuitive part of cloud operations, enabling teams to reinvest in innovation.

“Cloudability is a key enabler in advancing our FinOps maturity,” said Clemente. “It helps us drive efficiency without compromising productivity.”

Conclusion

Reckitt’s journey shows how a strategic FinOps approach—supported by the right technology—can turn cloud cost management into a driver of innovation. With IBM Cloudability, Reckitt has built a scalable model for cloud financial operations that supports long-term growth.
