Hybrid IT environments are the new norm and AI is everywhere, but without the right context, it can quickly send you down the wrong path instead of helping you make better decisions. In this session, Bill Lobig, VP of IBM Apptio, will explore how a layer of financial intelligence—built by unifying and enriching data from across the enterprise— help organizations manage technology spend across a Hybrid IT estate and transforms AI from a novelty into a trusted business advisor. Learn how CIOs and technology leaders are using this approach to make smarter investments, optimize costs, and unlock measurable business value from their technology spend and AI initiatives.

Transparency tells you what you spend; benchmarking tells you whether it’s reasonable – and what to do next. This practitioner’s walk-through turns IT cost and performance data into a clear set of decisions and next steps. I’ll share proprietary ISG insights from our data, and how I use them with clients to sharpen conversations on business value and confidence in investment decisions.

IBM is implementing the Apptio integrated product suite (Costing, Planning, Targetprocess, Cloudability, and the EBM framework) to achieve transparency in IT spending, optimize costs, and align spending with business value. The implementation aims to bridge the gap between IT and business by providing a consistent and transparent way to translate technology investments into business value. The key benefits of this implementation include cost savings, improved decision-making, and enhanced accountability. Additionally, IBM’s journey includes the evolution from Technology Business Management (TBM) to Enterprise Business Management (EBM), which aligns non-technology spend to value outcomes, manages process performance, risk, and ensures compliance. Overall, the goal is to ensure that every dollar of IT spending generates the highest value to IBM. The presentation outlines IBM’s Client Zero deployment of the Apptio Integrated Product Suite and covers the case for change, our crawl – walk – run approach, the value delivered to date, and the lessons we have learned along the way. By embracing a single, transparent source of financial truth and a culture of accountability, IBM has been able to drive roadmaps for $600M of IT cost savings. It will also touch on IBM’s evolution from TBM to Enterprise Business Management (EBM), and the role EBM plays in IBM’s digital business operations transformation.

If it feels like we are seeing new technology innovations every day, it is probably because it is true. Where Moore’s Law saw a doubling of chip capacity every two years, compute capacity for AI is doubling every six months! The challenge is that for every technology success you see, there is a landscape strewn with technology initiatives that underdelivered or outright failed. To succeed in this world, you need TBM. It is the critical open standard that unites the business, technology, and finance operations around a common goal — optimizing business value from technology. Join Matthew Guarini to learn about the four steps for winning with TBM fresh from our latest State of TBM research.
