The speed of innovation and the complexity of technology put a premium on fast, confident IT decision-making. Still, many organizations undermine their IT strategy when they sacrifice speed for confidence (a quick wrong decision is still wrong) or confidence for speed (a good decision taken slowly may be too late for the business to act on). Inaction, or being slow to respond, can be the difference between winning and losing new market opportunities.
Technology leaders must support decisions with insights they can easily access and share. The buck stops somewhere, but great decisions can’t come from just one person. A broader pool of influencers with access to shared insights leads to more buy-in, group accountability, and better outcomes.
One tactic to share insights is through widely circulated, trusted reports. Many organizations spend as much time questioning the data they are using to make decisions as they do using the data to make decisions. When you can’t get past data validation questions, your process is already taking too long.
One of the core tenants of Apptio is bringing operational and financial data together in one view. We have spent 15 years helping our customers collect, organize, and analyze previously disparate information to make fast, informed decisions. The Apptio platform provides our customers with the flexibility to make their reports for decision-making. Apptio BI Reporting is available to all Apptio customers as out-of-the-box reports that automatically populate with user data and can be copied, edited, and shared.

1. Financial Review by Account Groups – CapEx (ApptioOne – Cost)
This report provides an executive view of the overall CapEx budget and CapEx spend of your organization by account groups. Use this report to consider an executive brief that explains IT spend and to perform the periodic financial reviews that are essential for effectively managing IT spend. Data in this report includes account group, CapEx, CapEx budget, and CapEx budget variance so you can adjust plans to accommodate for variance. The report can be easily exported to a CSV file.
2. Financial Review by Account Groups – OpEx (ApptioOne – Cost)
This report provides an executive view of the overall OpEx budget variance and the OpEx spend (and IT costs) of your organization by account groups. When drilled down, you can view the cost center owners and cost centers so you can determine which account groups or cost center owners are responsible for the largest IT spend. The report helps users verify if they are accurately planning IT costs.
3. Financial Review by Owner – CapEx (ApptioOne – Cost)
This report provides an executive view of the overall CapEx budget variance and the CapEx spend of your organization by owners. When drilled down, you can view the report filtered by account group so you can determine which group is responsible for the largest IT spend. For example, the report populates the top five over-budget and under-budget groups based on your data. Various charts in the report also help you determine whether variances are real or caused by mis-categorization of data. This report provides visibility throughout your organization and to key stakeholders.
4. Financial Review by Owner – OpEx (ApptioOne – Cost)
This report provides an executive view of the overall OpEx budget variance and the OpEx spend (and IT costs) of your organization by owners. When drilled down, you can view the report by Account Group so you can determine which account group is responsible for the largest IT spend. Various charts in the report also help you determine whether variances are real or caused by mis-categorization of data.
5. ITP Plan Summary (ApptioOne – Plan)
This report provides a summary view of the overall spend of your organization by cost ownership, with quick KPIs showing the following metrics:
- Total planned spend (budget)
- Contract spend up for renewal during the plan’s year
- Current and planned headcount
The report breaks down planned spend, cost pool, spend type, and budget ownership. All components are drillable to line-item details to support additional analysis. Global filters allow for quick filtering of the report to specific cost owners, vendors, and OpEx/CapEx.
6. Executive View – Cloud Costs (Cloudability)
This report is designed for Cloudability users and provides a broad overview of the cloud costs for your organization. The report presents a clear view of the cloud costs by time frames, along with vendor breakdowns and transaction types.
