Hot off the presses, RightScale’s 6th annual State of the Cloud report cites several new trends, including a narrowing race among public cloud providers, a decrease in private cloud adoption, and a renewed focus among enterprises on optimizing cloud costs.
Among the highlights? Significant wasted cloud spend is driving users to focus on costs.
In the report, respondents are concerned about an estimated 30% in wasted spend, making optimizing cloud costs in 2017 a top priority for cloud users. Optimizing cloud costs is the top initiative across all cloud users (53%) and especially among mature cloud users (64%).
In contrast, only a minority of companies are taking critical actions to optimize cloud costs, such as shutting down unused workloads or selecting lower-cost clouds or regions.
So, how will companies get a handle on their cloud costs? To increase efficiency and savings, IT leaders need a full view of technology investments—on-premise, public cloud, private cloud— across infrastructure, applications, and business services and projects.
